1913 年 海軍推出首代平紋丹寧工作套裝，由一件套頭樣式的罩衫跟一條簡易的貼袋長褲組成。並依規定只能在工作時著用。


1940 年代出現HBT面料，意圖取代丹寧工作服，後者卻並未被停止使用，而是一直使用至1945年中後期。


現今更是現代水手的標誌。


今天復刻的 USN長褲 是1944-1945年代間的產物，有內骨和側縫。而一代初期型的版本約出現在1913-1917年間，是類桶織縫法車線收在大腿內側，雖然這樣的作法更簡單生產上更有效率，但取而代之的就是剪裁上的毫無變化，簡單來說就是大直筒更可以說像是穿兩條布袋在大腿上，效果呆板。所以後期型的剪裁對於身形的修飾上做了有效的調整，並且在臀部與大腿之間做了更貼合身形的剪裁，有著傳統高腰工作褲的影子。
